A Hidden Gem: Thaurer Alm – A Scenic Hike Near Innsbruck
If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway not far from Innsbruck, the Thaurer Alm, located at an altitude of 1,464 meters, is an ideal destination. Nestled in the Austrian Alps, it’s a personal favorite of mine for a day trip filled with natural beauty, great food, and relaxation.
Starting the Hike
You can start your hike to Thaurer Alm from either Rum or Thaur, two picturesque villages located in the lowlands. I usually opt for the route starting from Rum. Once you leave the parking area, head north towards Sibenwege, a trail junction. From here, you can choose a more challenging path, which first leads to the Rumer Alm, then to Vindler Alm, before finally reaching the Thaurer Alm.
This route offers a moderately demanding hike, perfect for those with a bit of hiking experience. The first part is along a well-maintained path, making it accessible for most hikers.
Stunning Views Along the Way
Upon reaching the Rumer Alm, it’s a great idea to take a break and enjoy a refreshing glass of Apfelsaft (apple juice). The trail continues upwards, revealing breathtaking views as you climb above the treeline. At a certain point, you’ll find a bench where you can sit and take in the mesmerizing scenery below. It’s a perfect spot for a meditative pause, where the worries of daily life seem to fade into the peacefulness of the mountains.
Afterward, the trail leads you to the Vindler Alm, another charming alpine hut run by a local family. Continuing on, the final stretch will take you to the Thaurer Alm, a quaint, traditional Tyrolean mountain lodge.
Thaurer Alm: A Slice of Alpine Serenity
When you arrive at the Thaurer Alm, you’re welcomed by the warmth and hospitality of the owner. Unlike many commercialized huts, this one feels more intimate, a place where you’re encouraged to take your time and savor the moment. The atmosphere is relaxed, with no rush to eat and leave. Here, you can truly unwind, basking in the beauty of your surroundings.
The hut offers a selection of delicious Tyrolean dishes at very reasonable prices. Whether you’re hungry for a hearty lunch or just a sweet homemade cake, the food here won’t disappoint. The rustic charm of the Alm, combined with the stunning mountain views, makes it a perfect spot to relax.
Around the hut, you’ll find various farm animals like chickens, cows, and goats, which add to the charm of this peaceful retreat.
A Hike to Kaisersäule
For those feeling up for an extra challenge, you can take a short but steep detour to the Kaisersäule. This imperial column, built in 1815, commemorates the visit of Emperor Franz I of Austria, who climbed this area to admire the panoramic views of the battlefields where Tyrolean fighters once resisted Napoleon’s forces. The hike to the Kaisersäule adds an additional layer of history and adventure to your journey.
The Descent
After enjoying some rest and soaking in the mountain views, you can either return via the main road back to the starting point or opt for the steeper, more adventurous hiking paths. But be cautious, especially on your knees, if you choose the steeper route!
The round trip from Rum to Thaurer Alm covers roughly 14 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 955 meters, taking approximately 4.5 hours, not including breaks.
